Small apartment, home office that doubles as a guest room, or a studio where every square foot counts — a wall bed is one of the smartest ways to get your floor back during the day. But today you can choose between a classic Murphy bed that you lift by hand and an automatic wall bed that opens and closes with a remote. Here is how they compare.
How a classic Murphy bed works
A traditional Murphy bed folds up into a cabinet on springs or gas pistons. You pull it down at night and push it back up in the morning. It is a proven design and usually the cheapest option.
The downsides: it takes some strength, especially with a heavy mattress; springs and pistons wear out and need adjustment; and lowering a bed by hand near children or pets requires care.
How an automatic wall bed works
An automatic wall bed uses an electric drive instead of your arms. Press a button and the bed lowers smoothly; press again and it folds back into the wardrobe. There is nothing to lift and nothing to catch.
- Easy for everyone — older adults, people with back or shoulder problems, anyone who does not want to wrestle with a mattress every day.
- Smooth, controlled motion — the motor moves the bed at a steady speed instead of relying on springs.
- Made every day — because it is effortless, people actually fold the bed up each morning, so the room stays a living room or an office.

Meet A-BED: an automatic wall bed made in Los Angeles
A-BED is our automatic wall bed with remote control, designed and built in Los Angeles. The basic model includes:
- a Twin bed, 79 × 39.5 × 18.5 inches, with an 8-inch mattress;
- a double-door wardrobe, 94.75 × 75 × 24.5 inches, into which the bed folds automatically;
- two remote controls;
- power from a regular 110V outlet (cord included).
A-BED also has an anti-gravity tilt and a built-in traction device — features you will not find on an ordinary Murphy bed. If you are considering traction for a health reason, talk to your doctor first.
Built to your specifications
Because we make every A-BED ourselves, it can be customized:
- size, material and color of the wardrobe;
- weight capacity;
- mattress firmness and thickness, or a massage mattress;
- a memory foam pillow;
- a custom Glisson loop, an additional arm support or a lumbar extension device.
Production time for the basic model is about two months; custom builds may take longer.
Which one should you choose?
Choose a classic Murphy bed if the bed will be used occasionally, the budget is tight and lifting it is not a problem.
Choose an automatic wall bed if it will be used every night, if anyone in the home finds lifting difficult, or if you want extra comfort features in the same footprint.
